This editorial cartoon was drawn in 2012 addressing the key issue that President Barack Obama delivered the policy of tax hikes. It is full of ironies, indicating the sarcasm and demeaning attitudes towards Obama's policy. In the cartoon, Obama who dresses exactly like a typical magician is preparing to play a trick in front of a black hat on a table. Besides him, there is a bubble of his words that "AND FOR MY NEXT TRICK, I'M GOING TO PULL A RABBIT OUT OF MY HAT..." In terms of tone, it is comic rather than serious. But considering the topic is serious, I find that it is a powerful irony that Obama who makes tax hikes is simply playing a trick, which is a very irresponsible decision-making without taking his people into consideration.
The prospectus of Hanyang University I have chosen is intended for its international exchange program. On the whole, it is informative and persuasive, but not eye-catching enough and some parts are over-detailed.
Message & Method The prospectus is a well-designed, content-rich one with brief introduction of both Korea and Hanyang University together with colorful pictures and decorations. The language used is simple English but effective while the images and decoration are well-chosen and closely relevant. But such characteristics are just too universal and thus by contrast, the prospectus of Hanyang University with its cover decorated with light red flowers, just like a cheap old-fashioned magazine, fails to catch people's immediate attention, though later I get to know the flower is a symbol of this university. Besides, it contains some parts that is unnecessarily over-detailed. For instance, there are two pages filled with a long long lists of its exchange partner universities. Medium Hanyang University has made a decent decision to use the prospectus as its medium to attract international students. For one thing, by means of a prospectus, target students or their parents can get the comprehensive information they need at once and have a look from time to time without getting puzzled and distracted by the sea of information online. For another, a prospectus can be a way to show its sincerity, build an impressive university image and thus achieve better promotional effects because the target students do fell different between paper versions and online versions. Compared with online versions, a prospect as a touchable object can inspire readers to feel they are getting close to the university other than having a long distance from it. |
